Unregistered user I'll try and buy it tomorrow in Nottingham (although their always late stocking it...) Sounds good though, from what I've heard.

Unregistered user Erm, are we talking about the February edition or the January one?
I've only just got the January one.
Cheers!

Unregistered user February - it's been released, but I could only buy the January one recently, which already showed an improvement. I think by the time the Feb issue is in the shops, I'll be back up in non-AU-stocking Middlesbrough, so time for me to get a sub...

Unregistered user dropped through my letterbox this morning.

looks a bit like a trade journal - it'll certainly be distinct on the news stands.

content definitely better but still apt to wander off about DVD's or something rather than all things RISC OS.

they want some authors too. h'mm...

Interesting - are there any scans anywhere? And is the old Acorn User logo still used?

Unregistered user I got mine yesterday too. I left home before the postman arrived! Very prompt.

Now, a little constructive criticism (I come from a design background so feel entitled to say so!)

The design is kind of better -- especially the front cover, but the page design needs a few tweaks -- for example, there's very little thumb space down the sides, and there needs to be a little separation of the text from the top of the page (just a couple of blank lines would do it). White space is important; not that I'm recommending the amount used in the old AU, but just enough to aid readability. Knocking the point size down half a point would be nice too, and would allow the above layout alterations.

The design becomes a bit predictable throughout the magazine -- some pages are all text and look very, very similar. The introduction of small, plain, simple graphic in a corner, or to introduce a question or letter would add that extra touch required.

But... I was kind of impressed. Definitely a step in the right direction. I am even considering writing an article or two myself, if the pressures of final year, final semester uni life allow -- which undoubtably they won't!.

Buy it and give them the money to make further improvements!

Unregistered user The top third of the page is black, with "Acorn User" in big, thin, white letters going across it. Underneath it says something about the alternative for power computing.

I don't like the black top. I think it'd be better with the colour piccy running behind the title.

hear hear.

I prefer it big as it is. There'd still be far more text per page than the old style.

Also, the topic headings get a bit lost in the rows of red dots.

Unregistered user I use to buy an acorm mag or two regular, when the A3010 came out. I stoped buying them back in 1997. I would still probably still buy two or three a year, but i can not find them in keighley, skipton or bradford area.

Unregistered user It's very surprising how many times you see words like 'Acorn' - ie, ending in a vowel and 'rn' written in a sans-serif font, like on the new AU cover. It is very easy to read it as Acom. Doh!

Unregistered user On the contrary, it stands out really quite well. Nearly every computer mag looks the same as nearly every other computer mag. I saw the black AU heading from quite far away -- and it was the only copy left!

Unregistered user Just a quick thought Michael, The actual text of the title (Acorn user) is very thin. Do you think it needs to be made to stand out a tad more?
Just a thought.
Cheers!

Looks a bit dull to me; I doubt it'll make it stand out on the news shelf. Then again it doesn't get the chance where I live. unhappy

Unregistered user Hmmm, just noticed this thread. I've been tweaking the design a little - that nasty purple should now be light blue, as intended monkey
Someone mentioned number of words on a page - there's 900/1000 words per page now, as opposed to around 300 before. So, same number of pages, but a huge increase in content. smile
Final point: Middlesbrough is cool grin That's my home town!

Sod all apart from the fact you can't get it there! smile

I did try to drag the topic back to RISC OS in my last post - I can't do it all at once, but give me a chance and I'll have it back to AU soon...

Oh, is that along the A19 just near/past Yarm? I never go that way though smile
I think it's a great place to be, maybe not in the centre of middlesbrough, but the area in general smile
Never go that way by car, but the coach does smile

I hate the town centre. Which is a pity, because that's where the uni is. I wish it was out of town a bit more. I've just been to Birmingham (of all places...) and realised that part of it's town centre is beautiful as well.

What's the nearest User Group to Middlesbrough?

Middlesbrough eh? great place to be wink

Hmmm... maybe... wink There seem to be a few Acorn people up there, but the disadvantage is that it's a bit rubbish! (Although the countryside is beautiful. When I'm travelling up there, the coach passes over this huge valley of trees, and it's just fantastic.)
