According to The Register Intel will be launching the XScale in September but only 300-400Mhz versions. More on http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/3/20140.html |

Maybe it'll be the other way round, you get the xScale chip in September and then (optionally) an Omega sometime afterwards - i.e., when its ready. As Intel have shown engineering samples to independant organisations I suspect xScale will arrive first. As for Omega no independant review YET (nearly two months after Wakefield when an Omega was Demoed), yep xScale will arrive first. |

Though Omega may well arrive before the 700ish and higher MHz XScales come out. 400MHz ones would be largely pointless wouldn't they? |

No not really. They have a more effective cache than the 233. The downside is some context switches take more clock cycles than the old 233. This would probably not amount to a noticeable delay on the 700 but may show up on the 400 (overall though the 400 would be faster). When you need to do pure processor based ops the xScale should be 400/233 times (71%) faster. For other things its down to how fast the Omega bus is (AFAIK) the SA can only access external RAM at 66MHz while xScale can manage 100MHz (if Omega supports that then I/O under xScale will be somewhat faster as well as register based stuff). In addition xScale allows 64bit memory access (SA only allows 32). This prefetch allows the xScale to implement a form of branch prediction that the SA can't. How these enhancements effect overall performance can only really be determined after xScale is delivered and benchmarked on an Omega. Developers will probably want xScale in an Omega even if it's only 400MHz as it will allow them to update their code for when 700MHz do finally arrive - in short I suspect some xScale may ship at slower speeds than that in the Omega ads - but the speed improvement will still make it a worthwhile upgrade.

That's going to be tight. Maybe the first Omegas will have XScale pre-installed |
