I don't suppose anybody has an A5000 keyboard that they would care to exchange for coin of the realm, do they? I assume A5000s need some sort of non standard keyboard - there doesn't seem to be a mouse port on the box, and I doubt an ordinary PC keyboard would fit the socket... Any ideas? |

IIRC they use the same keyboard as the old A300 and A400 series - the mouse plugs into the back of the keyboard. It's a PS2-type plug (I know because I use a PS2 keyboard extension cable on my A310) but it's not a "proper" PS2 system, so no, PC kyboards won't work. Maybe Stu Tyrrell has some converter tucked away in his cupboard somewhere... Hope that expands your options a little. |

Update -- I now have two A5000s and one keyboard. Huzzah. ARM3s are faaaaaaaast. I am now on the hunt for Sim City 3000. But... Is it common for the mouse pointer to occasionally jump sideways when you click? Or for IDEFS to crash when you try to deal with a file that doesn't exist? Or for the machine to lock up when you shift-break after shutting down? And can I get a Linux distribution that will work with 4MB RAM + 80MB HD?

Or for the machine to lock up when you shift-break after shutting down? The latter two have occasionally happened on my A5000. Could be a dodgy mains connector? And can I get a Linux distribution that will work with 4MB RAM + 80MB HD? Probably, but it'll be hard work. IIRC it has been done before. I'd rather wait for Aleph1 to do a build for Omega. If you're serious, I'll dig out some url's

I am now on the hunt for Sim City 3000. Ooops. I mean Sim City 2000. Unless some frantic porting has been going on without my knowing! Running Linux is more out of curiosity at the moment -- I don't expect to do anything serious with it on the hardware in question, although it would be nice if I could! My other plan is to cannibalise the second A5000 - is it a simple task to transfer the HD and RAM across, and have a souped up 8MB + 160MB A5000 instead?

Not the RAM you could have two hard drives - but you would be better off finding a 500M drive from an old PC (As far as I know any make except western digital) |

If the A5000s are 33MHz versions, the MEMC is IIRC socketed so doubling up the RAM could be DIY if you can find a carrier board. I would also avoid the WD drives - the only failure I've had (a 4 year old 2.1Gb in a PC) apart from a very old ex-Mac 5.25" SCSI. |
