Well, we should begin to see '60' plates later this year, so about a year. If you finally give up on your car (which I observe gave you yet more grief lately), perhaps you could get one.
EDIT: It just occurred to me to wonder what'll happen in the year 2050. Will we have '50' plates for the first half of the year, and then '00' plates for the second half? And then what? Since we started at '51', will there be no '01' at all?

If you finally give up on your car (which I observe gave you yet more grief lately), Yet more? This car hasn't given me enough grief to justify those two words, IMO! It has had a few problems this year, but nothing compared to the nightmares my cars caused when my hobby was off-road driving!
perhaps you could get one. If and when I replace the Mazda, the main criteria will be that whatever I buy is on a V plate or newer, so that I can have V14CEH - which was still available last time I looked. (I should buy the mark and keep it on retention, really).
But OM61 WTF would be great to have, IMO. |

I just looked it up on the DVLA website, but apparently you need to wait until June 2011 before they'll let you order one. |

Ah, yes - January 2008. That would have been the '92 Daihatsu Fourtrak (J500 MUD) - the last of my off-roaders.
I think I'd stopped off-roading by that point (probably getting on for a year), after a somewhat one-sided argument with the off-road club chairman. I bought the Mazda in May 2008. |

As far as I'm concerned, it's just about having a small, reasonably reliable soft top.
My first two cars were MG Midgets and all the years I'd been running 4x4s and off-road driving, I missed the pleasure of driving with the roof down* so when I stopped the off-roading, it became practical to go back to where I started. Except the car I bought was a bit more reliable than the MGs**
The only problem with the Mazda is that the boot space is a bit too small. The location of the stupid 'space saver' wheel doesn't help. It's a bigger car than the MG Midgets, yet I can fit less in it.
* I was able to do that for the life of one of my 4x4s.
** Actually, the first MG wasn't too bad in terms of reliability. Its problems were more cosmetic and structural. :/ |

What about the space where the top folds down into? When the top is up, there's plenty of space for stuff, there, too. Yeah, and likewise the passenger seat (and footwell) might be free - but that's not always practical. Not just in terms of the size/shape of what's being carried*, but also for reasons of security. (On a long journey, I don't necessarily know in advance whether I'll be stopping anywhere on the way).
Leaving something on display in an unattended car is bad enough, but in a soft top is sheer idiocy.
* The flat-pack chair I bought the other week had to be put on the passenger seat, and then only with the top down. It wouldn't go in the boot, the box was to wide to slip it down into the footwell, and too long to go on the seat with the roof up. Luckily, it was a nice day! |
