Michael Emerton is without any webspace at the moment, so it is not available anywhere AFAIK :-(
The new version is called MuStick and should be back online soon(ish). |

Hi Franck,
As Bryan said, I haven't sorted out hosting for it yet.
Due to a stupidly short (2 hours) response time to log in to the free hosts forum, and due to them loosing my account for nearly 3 months, I gave up trying to host it there.
I am currently still writing it, so it still very much alpha, but sadly Work and Family commitments have meant I have barely touched it since the show.
However, I do now have a 'portable' pi so should be able to use spare time more efficiently to develop it.
What system do you use for RISC OS? At present it has been developed on a BeagleBoard XM (RIP) and a MkI Model B Raspberry Pi.
I still have the RiscPC RISC OS Adjust (4.39 - 6) version of RiscDJ on my RiscPC at work.
Also do you have any features you would like in it?
Thanks for the interest, Michael |

As an after thought - Which name do people prefer:
* "RiscDJ * !MuStick * !ProDJ * [offer an alternative?]
RiscDJ seems to be what people know it as.
In the re-design, I chose MuStick due to the Raspberry Pi being a stick shape in the news at the time... (Music Stick).
I'm happy to change it back if the general consensus likes?

Hi Michael,
Thanks for your feedback.
I am currently running a BeagleBoard XM and also a Raspberry Pi Model B.
What I am actually looking for is playing MP3 with a nice full screen GUI just capable to handle playlists and albums.
For your hosting issue, I can host you if you wish on norisc-nofun.co.uk , it is a small server (imac G3 saved from the trashed) but it fits the purpose.
Sincerely,
Franck |

Also, I was thinking for the hosting , you may get in touch with Andrew to have !RiscDJ (or !ProDJ) available on PlingStore, it should make your life easier. |

I was approached at the show by RComp, and have agreed (Overwhelmed by the prospect really!) to host it through that.
I just need to make the product releasable grade now! |

We're certainly very happy to host peoples' software on PlingStore, and very much look forward to !RiscDJ (or whatever it becomes known as).
One of the most popular apps on the store (along with Rise of the Triad, Hatari and Calendar) has been DigitalCD, so I think !RiscDJ will be warmly received
The last week or so has seen over 1000 downloads, with "entertainment" apps (music/games etc) counting for the lion's share of them. |

It is currently still only in the Pi distribution (and RCI machines, obviously), but hopefully that'll change this week, now that the builders have left. I'm rather chasing my tail at the moment catching up on all the disruption.
I may even get something up there today, time permitting. Tomorrow is already booked up, but otherwise later in the week. |

Hi Leo, thanks for the interest.
RiscDJ isn't lost to abandonware!
Currently I am working on getting it ready for the London Show, but have suffered from a dead development board, which has set me back a bit.
I am aiming to distribute it through the !Store, but need to ensure it is worthy of that!
May I ask a few questions:
What you are intending to run this on? Which OS? How much memory? Where is your music stored?
I have a site registered at http://www.riscdj.freeiz.com.
I had issues with my last provider (lost my site twice!).
I will reveal more as at the Lond Show (hopefully)!

Hi Michael,
I'm intending to run this on my Kinetic RISC PC with RISC OS 6, it has 96MB RAM (64MB on Kinetic, 32MB on motherboard).
I have a huge iTunes library backed-up (35,000ish songs) that I used to use on my macbook pro with iTunes, unfortunately I no longer have this mac and the only computers I now possess are a Toshiba laptop and the RISC PC. My RISC PC doesn't get used much these days so I would like to put it to work as a jukebox connected to my beosystem.
My idea is to put a new large HDD in the RISC PC (recommendations please - it must work on the on-board IDE controller)and to copy my iTunes library to it.
My iTunes library was very tidy (correct album art, artist/title etc...) and I would love to be able to access it once more. Will I be able to just copy the iTunes folder across and will RiscDJ be able to render all the artwork and track info correctly?

Hi Lee,
Currently RiscDJ can handle MP3, OGG, FLAC, Wave, and AAC? (not tried the last 2).
So your music will need to be in those formats.
I havn't got access to a 26 bit machine anymore, so I havn't tested it on there, however, if you are just wanting to use it as a JukeBox, then maybe softloading (or purchase the ROMs) RISC OS 5 on may do the trick, nothing I have done defines it as 32 Bit though.
Presently it doesn't handle artwork, as I use DigitalCD's DiskSample module for playback, and as far as I am aware, I am unable to extract artwork from the files using the version I have. However I can extract Album, Artist, and track info
I am very impressed at your track count! I thought I had done well with ~20,000 tracks!
RiscDJ makes heavy use of skins (Blue only at the moment) and is implimented in sprites (but drawn where possible), and so the memory usage is quite high, for RISC OS at least. I will be able to provide an accurate quote for that when I have completed it
regards Michael |

Hi Michael,
99% of my collection are 196kbits + with a few FLACs so I guess that should be OK.
If I have problems running it on RISC OS 6 I will softload RO5, I don't have any podules etc installed so that won't be a problem.
Shame it doesn't handle artwork, but I can live without them. Do you have plans to get artwork working in the future?
Its took me many years to build up this library (since 2001 IIRC) I used to DJ so was constantly adding new tracks, If you think thats a few you should see my vinyl LP collection ;-)
Can I request a Bang and Olufsen 'styled' theme? With black and red colouring. That way it will blend in with my setup
Looking forward to testing it and seeing what it can do.....
Best Regards

Hi Andrew, Is it possible that you could modify PlingStore, so that it will run from a Read-Only share, & that the first thing that it does, is not to immediately start a download, but to open the Choices window, so that sensible values may be entered, closing after, say 5 seconds if no values are entered, with default values pointing to somewhere in the Choices:Write area, and NOT into the applications folder.
TIA

!Store has to be self-updating, so I don't really know how it would make sense on a read-only share.
You can unhook your network lead (or set the offline mode via !Run) to run without a network feed, but it is essentially useless in that mode except for demo, or changing the location of the data store, I suppose.
FWIW, we agonised long and hard over where to store the data, and we took on board that people didn't like having multiple Mbs of data in !Boot. To be honest, you can't win.
Generally speaking, "store" type programs, which by their nature have to update regularly, tend not to work from read-only mediums (Steam etc). And to be honest, if we allowed out-of-date versions to access the system and place orders etc, it is asking for problems.
I'm also wondering why you're running it from a read only share, rather than having it on your RISC OS machine... it's not like it is protected or anything!

Thinking about it, it might be possible to trap failures to write to the default location, and fall back to other "obvious" locations in case of failure. However, this still doesn't solve the issue of updating the main program - we'd have to assume that the program itself was current. |

Ooh, that word - assume- dangerous that
Answering the earlier question, why from a Read-Only Share, because I have in use currently 4 RiscPCs, an Iyonix, and a Pi, with other stuff appearing & disappearing, so not having to install stuff on each machine is a real time saver. As far as your main prog is concerned, on first run, copy the upgradable bit to Choices:Write or !Scrap, and check it on subsequent runs.
If we hope to see the Pi & other modern hardware in use in education & elsewhere, then these sort of issues need to be addressed.
Think that covers it. Dave |

!Store is present on every Pi and other modern RISC OS hardware anyway, so all you have to do is run it, or more simply, make your downloads folder a read-only share on the server computer, which would be far more sensible in the scenario given.
Thing is, development costs me money, and I have to target the spend where it matters most. Right now, that's in the update system and the like. I've already invested thousands in the project, and it'll be years before we see a return, so I have to be a bit careful.
I can't help feeling that this sort of change is less of an immediate priority.
Personally, my take is definately that sharing the downloads folder is best - do you really want all-on-sundry using !Store in an educational environment? I suggest that just having your downloaded software accessible is much more sensible.
In a school environment, !Store is more of an admin tool, not a user-tool. |
