When I was a kid, people used to say Merry Christmas. I guess that's now offensive to Muslims or something? |

I find Christmas incredibly annoying on the basis that, despite being an atheist, it's shoved down my throat and it's pretty much expected of me to somehow enjoy the celebration of a religious figure in whom I have absolutely no bloody belief.
When people say "Merry Christmas" or similar to me I really struggle to bite my tongue and not say the sort of thing I want to say. Though this year I have responded several times with "Fuck Christmas and the donkey it allegedly rode in on" so maybe I'm not doing a good enough job in that.
Having said that, it's been when people know how I feel about this poxy festival and have said it to me. In which case, they are being offensive as far as I'm concerned, so I will happily respond in kind.
So, yeah. It may very well be offensive to Muslims - but it certainly is to me.
(edit: after previewing, I put the last line in... in the wrong place.)

I couldn't give two shits about Christmas, I'm just sick of all this politically correct don't-offend-random-group bullshit. If Christians want to say "Christmas", then they can do so. No one group should have the right to dictate to others how they should address their own beliefs. As to not being personally attached to it, so what? If a priest blesses me in passing, I'm not going to have a go at him for it (unless my skin starts to burn), but by the same token, I feel no inclination to bless him in return. Let them have their silly superstitions and commercially exploitative holidays. You don't need to join in, but the very freedom of speech that allows you to rant against it is the same freedom of speech that allows them to celebrate it in the first place. There's nothing wrong with different beliefs and traditions; what I intensely dislike is the spirit of bullshit compromise and political correctness that makes everything into a bland, grey paste.
Happy fucking holidays. Right. |

That's all very nice, but it's not what I said.
I'm not objecting to people "saying" Christmas, and I'm not dictating how they address their own beliefs. People can celebrate it however they sodding well like, as long as they don't shove it down my throat and expect me to participate and enjoy it as well.
And while I dislike it intensely, I do bite my tongue when people who do not know my views on the subject wish me a merry Christmas or whatever - although, as you acknowledge, I have every right to tell them to stick Christmas up their arses. Depending on who it is, I might very well explain my position, or I might not.
It's when people who know how I feel about it wish me a merry Christmas that it is offensive - especially if they number among those who for whatever idiotic reason think I should be celebrating it as well. |

That... Christmas thing is a capitalist/consumerism invention I deeply hate. Of course it has religious roots I hate even more, but religion is almost dead nowadays and is bound to disappear at last when old people passes away. I hope you all have good days with your friends and family! But please don't consume, or better, consume responsibly! Buy things made in countries where working rights are respected, and consume local goods!
Capitalism is killing us.

Have a Merry Christmas, if you prefer, or Saturnalia. I'm an atheist, neither has much meaning to me. I understand we need some time off, especially during the winter months. |

Oh, and a Doctor Who 25th December 'Special' of course - though I'd not miss it if they stopped; there wasn't such a thing back in the old days of Doctor Who, and I don't see what's so 'special' about it these days - it's not as though it's longer, or anything; it's just an ordinary episode, set at Christmas. Bah humbug! |

I was feeling a bit Bah Humbug in the run-up but it's not so bad, really. Cheers anyway, and here's another vote* against rampant corporate greed.
* In principle, at least - not many local gifts this year, I'm afraid. |

HAPPY MIDWINTER FESTIVAL Happy Winterval! Winterval - I shudder at this term.
Some interesting viewpoints re. Christmas. I've found that the further east you go, the better Christmas is.
Looking back, my best festive times were in Malaysia. There, it's just one of many many public holidays, as respect to other religions. I found it great that Muslims, Hindus, any religious denomination, enjoyed Christmas, as much as any other religion. I found that really enlightening.
Christmas in the West is very much tied to consumerism and capitalism. Only made worse when you have children ;-)
Whatever your view, enjoy some well earned time off |

Merry Xmas!
or is that another bum reference? Actually the X in Xmas goes back about a thousand years and derives from the start of the Greek form of "Christ", which begins with an "X-". Many people believe, incorrectly, that it's a substitution to remove the Christian part of the name, but in fact it's quite the opposite. |
