I have just released version 3.15 of Star Fighter 3000, which adds an option to scale the display to 320x480 when running in full-screen mode. This prevents letterboxed (or postcard) display on VGA-type monitors.

I gave up trying to persuade my monitor to display a 320x512 screen mode properly. It is a shame because that mode would have eliminated all visual artefacts of scaling, being exactly twice the game's native vertical resolution.

You can download a patch from the usual place: http://starfighter.acornarcade.com

Two posts, eight years apart, and yet strangely similar...

Think how much fun we'd have missed if Acorn had actually cared about backward-compatibly instead of just releasing a 'games modes' module and hoping that would make everything okay. They could have implemented a scaler in the operating system or even in hardware. It's not as though the VIDC20 was an off-the-shelf part.

Is there any chance that the static at the start of the intro could be reinstated? IIRC the old way of doing the effect was not easy to do in a window, but maybe another method could be used to achieve a static effect?

Of course, it is possible. What's it worth? smile

Completion! Esteem! Glory!

It was part of the set-up of the premise that your progress was being broadcast on Fednet's TV network. Also it tied the game in with Fednet's other game SR2000, which had the same kind of intro. smile

Sadly, Star Fighter 3000 is too big to ever be complete. I have a short list of defects that are too difficult to justify fixing. For a program that is very nearly twenty years old, it has had a 'good innings'.

Any lingering traces of glory belong to Tim Parry and Andrew Hutchings. A Gertrude Jekyll garden is always a Gertrude Jekyll garden, no matter how many generations of gardeners tend to it.

Well I'd say your changes were all very worthwhile. Especially the 32-bitting, running in a window, increased rendering distance, and all the bug fixes. It certainly gave the game a new lease of life here. smile

It it possible to pay for a digital download of this game? I live in the US and transferring from a CD to my RPI will be a huge pain.

It was nice just to hear the audio from the game on my A5000 even though the monitor wouldn't display at that pixel rate.

Isn't it available on the Pi Store?

To get it running on the A5000 you probably want LCDGameModes and possibly also AutoVIDC, although having said that I'm sure it doesn't use non-standard rates so you may want to check your MonitorType is set to 4 if you're using a VGA screen.

I'd welcome it (and any other games) on !Store, but I don't know who has copyright these days - possible Dave Holden?

I know Dave has his own online shop, so I've not troubled him about !Store, but his games would be *most welcome* additions, and games are amongst the top downloads on !Store, with things like Rise of the Triad having several thousand downloads!

Indeed, if anyone else has games they'd like to be on !Store, I think they'd be very welcome additions as Pi users seem particularly keen on gaming/entertainment.

Well, see here for more that will end up on !Store eventually. smile

I'm not going to add them as they are, because there are odd little issues with them - Exeria and Switch both freeze on the Pi after a short while, for example, which I think is related to the known keyboard/mouse issues. They'll appear eventually, though.

Well it's available as a download from exactly the same place as the CD, namely the APDL web site.

Cool - I didn't see this!

I was looking here: http://www.apdl.co.uk/isv/games/sf3000.htm

I could have sworn that on an iPad, the "buy non-UK" link did not tell me that a download was available. On a desktop now, and I can see it.
