I decided to plundge and get a few Acorn hardwares, one on my list was a 16-Bit sound upgrade for the RiscPC. After opening the box and reading the instructions I go ahead and begin installing it. I open the Risc up and begin installing it only to see something off. There is a short cable attached to the module that apparently plugs into a 5-pin header, but the diagram that shows where that 5-pin arrangement is appears on my mobo to be only be 4 pins (with all 4 jumpered).
Anyone know what's going on here? |

I don't have an original RiscPC to hand to check, but do remember that only first-edition RiscPCs were missing the 16bit sounds. If the system shipped with RISC OS 3.60 or later (ie. rev2 or later) it should already have 16bit sound built-in. |

I can see that is is banded "Issue 1" but I can't see what revision it is. Where do I need to look to find out what I have? |

Have a look at Chris Why's Acorn pages, there are good pictures of various RPC mainboards there, as well as information about the various 16bit sound upgrades (including manuals), e.g.

Looks like there were early RPCs that didn't have the pins necessary to upgrade the sound. |

I did have a gander at his site but couldn't get too much info as mine wasnt an issue number, but a letter "A". Just a guess, would this mean I have a later one? Did Acorn at the time move from numbers to letters for issue revisions? |

A lot of the RPC 600 motherboards only had 4 pins (in fact, some had none at all). You'll see that the 5th lead on the plug is the earth. Just connect the plug with this one left hanging off the end. |

I had another google for "issues" and "part numbers".
It looks like part numbers 0197,000 and 0197,100 were 8bit sound variants, while 1208,000 is the 16bit sound variant. There were various "issues" for each of those variants.
You should be able to see the part number of your mainboard where the NIC is located. |

I had another google for "issues" and "part numbers".

You should be able to see the part number of your mainboard where the NIC is located. Well what a palava, if that is the case than it seems I got an 8-bit setup without a 5th pin assumed (as stated above) is earth. Plugged it in anyway. Will let you know how I get on anyways.
EDIT: I own an "0197,000" varient.
