Hello there.
I have a load of software on A3010 software on A3010 format floppy disks including the only copy of an art-game that has been exhibited in the Prater Theatre Berlin.
Here is a video of the game :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbbUPAXaja4
The low-poly 3D character at the beginning is not part of the game - nor is my voice - also - interlacing problems - the video was digitised through a VHS machine.
As the only copy of this is on floppy disk and I have no A3010 to play it on I would like to be able to come to the show and get it put online for preservation purposes (I am happy to make it publicly available - though if possible I would like to add some text into the loading screen so that people can find their way to my site) I am also happy to host the game.
I am willing to travel a reasonable distance to someone who would know how to do this. I live in Derby and don't drive, so if you are in a city with a good train system that will help. I am also contemplating coming to the RISC OS London Show 2018.
Thanks in advance, Mike |

Hi Mike,
I'm in Derby and have an A3010. I'll need to check if it still works but if so I'd be more than happy to lend it to you.
I'll dig it out and see if I can get it working in the next few days.

That would be cool. Would you know how to get the contents of a disk online or into a modern format (memory stick etc?) |

I packed up my RISC PC and software in 2005 when I moved house and never got round to unpacking them. The A3010 would have been used up until around 1997 so I wasn't that hopeful it would still work.
I have cleaned it, found a mouse and the welcome guide and an aerial lead. I attached it to a budget flatscreen TV and turned it on with a reset and it booted into the RISC OS 3 desktop. Everything seemed to work fine,it read the contents of a floppy disc, the keyboard worked etc.
I can take it in to my office on Pride Park if that's convenient for you?
I don't know how you would get the contents of a disc into a modern format but you should at least be able to run what's on the disc and make copies. You could try contacting DARC https://www.darc-tech.org.uk they were originally a local Acorn User Group so I'd imagine that somebody would be able to help you with this. |

It would be useful just to make a copy of the original disc so that there is at least a backup. If the A3010 has a hard drive then an image of the original disc could be stored on that. I used to use a tool called DImager for that - I'll have to dig around for a download URL. Edit: Actually, it was ADFimager. I found it via the Discimage Creation Tools page which also has links to other tools.
Be aware of the need to replace the battery in the A3010.
Also, it may be useful to search or ask on the stardot forums for tips on imaging discs. The Archimedes Software Preservation Project may also be a useful place to go for information about ways to create disc images.

Not sure how it differs to ADFimager - imagine they use similar approaches, but it may be worth trying both to see if there's any difference. Best of luck. |
