I'm looking to replace a power supply in a Risc PC - ideally with something silent.

Are there suitable fanless power supplies out there that provide enough power for a Risc PC, and the right voltages (plus fit in the case)

TIA

I think you can use small form-factor PC PSUs, but since the Risc PC PSU wasn't a standard form factor to begin with you're going to have to deal with things like it not matching up to the hole in the back of the case, motherboard power connector differences, needing to convert the soft-on power trigger to work with the latching power switch used on the front of the case, potential airflow issues, etc.

Asking on stardot might be best - I'm fairly certain I saw a thread/message about this kind of thing recently, but my searches haven't turned up anything useful.

On the other hand, if your RiscPC only has a 70W PSU then CJE's prices for 70W PSUs seem to be fairly reasonable compared to small form-factor PC PSUs.

And I found that a major source of the noise in my RiscPC was the ageing original hard disc - swapping it out for a CF card made things much quieter.

Thank you Jeffrey. I will take a look. Very good point about the hard drive.

My other thought, is that the machine is only really used to run !Oregano (the original - not !Oregano2) - Is there any way to run this on 32bit RISC OS these days? (!NetSurf isn't an option for the user) e.g on a Raspberry Pi

The other places to go for PSU are ourselves (R-Comp) and Orpheus, both of whom have a reasonable stock of RiscPCs ready for spares (and Iyonixes in our case). You may find the prices more appealing.

Big problem with PSUs though is carriage, because they're neither small nor light.

Thanks Andrew, The main idea was to replace the PSU with a less noisy one as the current PSU is in working order, so wouldn't be looking for a like for like replacement. However, if it is possible to get !Oregano (the only app the computer is used for) running on a 32bit version of RISC OS, that would solve the problem, as the physical machine could just be replaced with an emulator(on Windows), or small RaspPi-like machine.

If the PSU is fine you could just change the fan for a much quieter sleeve bearing one. They can be a bit fiddly to fit and aren't cheap. We do a range. See:http://www.cjemicros.co.uk/micros/prices/categories/spares.shtml#PAP-FAN12

Oregano should run fine on VirtualRPC as it runs RISC OS 4 or 6.

It should also be fine on RPCEmu providing you install RO 3, 4 or 6 on it, but the networking is trickier to setup.
