Unregistered user Hi folks,

Just to pre-warn you, I've splashed out on some new hardware to replace The Icon Bar's aging server and hope to set it up over the weekend. Once the weekend rush is out of the way, and depending on whether I've done my job right, I aim to switch the servers over next week.

I'll keep you posted with more info when time scales become clearer.

Cheers,
Rich.

Unregistered user And luckily Foggy's server's trashed, so I can steal his IP address to run the two TIB servers two side-by-side during the set up - thanks Fogs for buying sh17 hardware smile

Unregistered user When you say "network server" what do you want it to do? Is this for personal, local use, or are you trying to offer services to other people across the Internet?

If it's just a web server then WebJames is pretty good, and free; NetPlex is now semi-commercial and is good too. Both allow you to run CGI programs, and I've written a mixture of BASIC and Perl that can do things like control MP3 players, take screenshots etc.

I also use the Samba server, and have the drive mapped to F: on my office PC so I can save stuff directly to my RiscPC which works very well. It also means you don't need to run an FTP server for internal usage (as does ShareFS if you only have Acorn machines on the network).

There are a number of telnet-like servers so you can log into your Acorn machine and execute *commands as if you were using the machine directly, but *commands aren't quite as useful under RISC OS as some servers as the OS is more directed at desktop usage. It's fun getting the CD ROM to eject from across the room though smile You could look into VNC, which allows you to remote-control a desktop, but that might be a bit of overkill.

Apart from the Navaho stuff which is no longer supported, and the Ant server suite (ditto?) I don't know if you can run a mail server. Personally I wouldn't want to try! smile

If it's for more complex stuff... well, a cheap Linux box might be a worthwhile investment. RISC OS wasn't really designed to be more than a desktop machine, and can slow down to a crawl or stop when someone accesses it across the network. You can get versions of Linux that run on a RiscPC as well, but an old 486 running RedHat means that for a minimal outlay you can still use your RiscPC as a desktop machine and have networked services.

Unregistered user Okay, so this is taking a little longer than I had hoped - I thought it would be cool to have three hard drives in the new server to increase performance (OS/logs/mail, swap and web pages served off different drives and the web pages off a different IDE bus), but the 1GB drive I put in to act as the swap partition works at a different speed and stopped the machine booting up unhappy

So /this/ weekend I'll be trying to configure the server, with a mere 50GB of storage... wink
