Seeing as the chances of a colour screen aren't looking too hopeful on the Microdigital/RiscStation portable at least at first - will you be buying it? |

Not at 1000ukp I would have to think twice about a colour one at 1000 but a grayscale, forget it! what planet are these people living on? You would have to be talking about <600ukp for me to even think about getting a 'black and white!' computer. This is really going to give the platform a bad name come on it is the year 2000! they will be tring to sell us 5.25 inch floppy disk drives next!

I agree too - 1000ukp is too steep for grayscale. But personally I would be after RISC OS on a NetBook (if I had the money!)... |

Well, see my comment on the wakefield report. I'd be willing to pay muchos for a decent ROS laptop, but I think I'd rather buy a 2nd hand A4 than a "new" _greyscale_ MD/RS laptop.. However, if it was a TFT screen, and the notebook would be small like the VAIO or lifebook, I'd consider it. Until then, my bet is on RON. |

If the new portable doesn't have a colour screen, then it is dead in the water. We are RISC OS enthusiasts, so we know how good the OS is. However, your average Joe has to be persuaded to give RISC OS a try. Trying to do that on a machine that is perceived as old fashioned because it has a "black and white" screen may be impossible. |

Why should I buy a machine with greyscale display? There's no sensible reason for it - even not with RiscOS...maybe at a price of 2000 DEM (should be around 600 UKP inc. VAT)...hey, it's RiscOS, not PalmOS... |

Did no-one else notice that RiscStation are hoping to be able to sell a colour RISCOS portable in a very nice case, in about 6 months? Surely that's what the talk should be about - would you buy one of them (yes yes yes:) for £1500 or whatever? I'd want to be able to show off a RISC OS portable thankyou. Having made that point, I agree that a greyscale (Mircodigital's project) is "dead in the water". When I put this to the guys on the Microdigital stand, the response was that greyscale would be cheaper. Hmm. OK then. As for RoN, is it even going to happen? |

I am looking to buy a RISCOS portable, and I'll most probably buy whatever gets to market first! Colour would be nice, but a mono screen would be acceptable if there was a colour output (vga port), for the occasions when I would want to connect to a monitor/projector. Battery-life, and the ability to run Easiwriter/Impression/ZAP is more of a priority to me. |

I spoke to microdigital and the reason that they are going for a mono portable is that there is no standard colour display, there are mono ones. All colour laptops have a custom made panel for that laptop (which is why you throw them away when they break)If the mono one is a success they can justify the expense of getting a custom one made. I would hope that there would be an upgrade path from mono to colour. If they ever make a custom one, hopefully it would be physically compatible with the mono panels they are using. I believe the price will be closer to £700 than £1000 |

Are you sure? I find it hard to believe that they would make a seperate screen for each laptop - that would be a massive waste of resources. Especially since LDC screens seem to come in a only a few set sizes... I think another of the factors is that the VIDC20 has a built-in 16-greyscale LCD driver so it is much easier to use a greyscale screen rather than a colour one. |

I believe that Microdigital are going to make a mono portable, whilst RiscStation are planning to produce a colour one (see my posting above and at the /bottom/ of TIB's wakefield news page - http://www.iconbar.com/news/wakefield2000/ ). This way they won't overlap development and the RISC OS market should hopefully find itself with a choice of 2 laptops for the first time eve. Sounds good to me. At wakefield, both companies were adament that their products would definatley se production, and soon, however, knowing the history of this market . . . who knows. Hopefully :) |

A separate screen for each laptop a waste of resources? Isn't wasting resources part of the PC ethos? What Microdigital said certainly fits in with my experience of Laptops with dead screens. ie its cheaper to buy a new laptop than a new screen. |
