Unregistered user Anyone who's seen the latest news on the Acorn Cybervillage will know what the Bad news is.
Lets just hope it's not as bad as it seems, fingers crossed eh?

The Good news though is that someone is working on a new piece of Dial-up software.
Apparently it uses the Windows script files to setup your machine.
Can't wait to see it

Unregistered user I did read the cybervillage news, i don't want be a profet but i'm waiting this new because i did undestand (many mounts ago) that both RISC OS Ltd and Pace want support a system for fight with linux or windows... this is the why in the 2k year we have not a lot of features like i wrote in the "Ideas for RISC OS plug-ins", the problems are that nothing want continue to support the system, but this is a wrong actions (yes support RISC OS for now not is a very good investement) but it have a lot of features for be better that linux etc... why? well it structure so easy let it be the very best of personal system (and also for graphics) we have all instruments we only need a new conception of OS that mean 32 bit, protected memory, premptive multitask and multi-treads, after that we can use big server programs or only games or connection dial up etc... but first we need a core that use all ARM (and future ARM) features, that is fast in data transactions but this story maybe no one will write...

Unregistered user One of the things that is bothering me though is that any version of RISC OS that does have all those features is going to look VERY different from an implementational point of view. I'm not confident that it is possible to bolt all those features onto RISC OS (or rather I'm not confident that it's worth the effort that would be involved). It seems that 32bit compliance hasn't been started yet and even when it begins is going to take at least a year. Added to this various postings on the newsgroups claim that doing so will change the behaviour of a fair number of SWI calls which will be big trouble for applications.

Oh dear I seem to have come over all negative....

Unregistered user If there is to be a future for the platform, RISC OS needs to become fully 32bit and be able to take advantage of the new superfast ARM chips. Don't forget, 64bit chips and operating systems are already on the way.

We also need hardware independence so we can use graphics cards and soundcards and basically have all the advantages of the PC world.

Finally we need two emulators or similar:

1. To run older RISC OS apps that don't like the new native 32bit OS
2. To run Windoze apps

Net software needs to be cheaper and up to date (same as IE and Netscape)and we need some high powered authoring tools to rival Claris and Dreamweaver.

Without all this, we'll simply be left behind and it'll become too expensive to actually use the machines.

Unregistered user The problem isn't what we need - that's very well known. The problem is where is it going to come from? At the end of day all of these suggestions require developers and I've covered the problems we face with this before in one of the other discussion threads (probably Poll for plugins).

How do we attract developers to the platform? Well this is tricky as it's proving difficult enough to keep developers who already know the platform. For the few we do have it's a labour of love and I bet a fair number of those are stuck with hardware that they feel or know is inadequate but aren't willing to risk a substantial sum of money on an upgrade (I'm in this category).

Right now I think the major problem is actually one of stability. The market is in a precarious position and is not being helped by continual rumours of the demise of RISC OS Ltd, or the loss of their developers or the continual arguing on the newsgroups over stupid things.

What I need right now is a statement from RISC OS Ltd that says either that the resources to develop RISC OS to a given specification have been found (either via them or Pace), that this work is going to be carried out over the next X months and is guaranteed to happen OR I need them to say it's all over. I don't think this is unreasonable, and neither will the majority of developers. The current uncertainty has me "paralysed". I'm not willing to devote my limited resources to the platform and having used Windows day in and day out for the past two years it becomes a more attractive prospect everyday. (Win2k has some really neat features).

My apologies if this is really negative but I think sometimes you need to be realistic.

Unregistered user Lee i full agree with you, well i want say this i did try to find the OLD WINRISC (an app that let us use windoze apps UNDER RISC OS, with the RISC OS INTERFACE) for upgrade it to RISC OS 4 and noone have it also for money, I did tried to make a "RISC OS 4 power pack" with server programs, winrisc, ArmTCP upgraded for use ISDN, Finaly my ISDN driver for ArmTCP and Zyxel TA128 modems are done and it function very good at 64 and 128kb!!!!!, actualy i did find an old version of webster (the PD version and i would love to make a new version, PD of course, that support new internet features, but i can not because it is a commercial software now and i can't...) but my dream (actualy) is to make:

1) RISC OS 4 power pack (with pre-emptive wimp 2 multitask and other things up) and some serious desktop enanchements

2) Risc OS Programmer's suite (with all about GCC and BBC Basic, and a lot of libraries and info about ARMs and RISC OS) (also program editors like Vim and Zap and all usefull programming tools and manuals in HTML and StrongHLP format)

3) Finish my CAESAR MEGASTORE Risc os 4 version (an e-commerce suite that use Navaho Server, that let us have a e-commerce server under Risc OS 4) but i need a S.Q.L. Server or database and i didn't find it actualy there is only DatasTORE that is very expansive for me (i have not money!)

4) Risc OS Web programming suite (for let Risc OS come-in to web programming with very low costs and very powerfull instruments)

ALL THIS PACKAGES WITH AN INSTALL PROGRAM that let us make some clicks and nothingelse for install all the software.
Do you think that are good ideas?
Someone are interessed to this or to help me?

Unregistered user Paolo

What you stated seems quiet interesting. Please contact:

contact@bluebirdy.de

web: http://www.bluebirdy.de

or maybe try riscos@gmx.net

just try http://tcr.kharchi.de

I think, there are enough developers around, who could help you (or better: us) to complete this!!

Unregistered user I would have to agree. It's time RISC OS Ltd told us what is going on.

I believe a variation on open source has been suggested in another thread, so if RISC OS Ltd find that themselves and Pace can't or won't develop the system for the desktop, then they need to arrange such a non-commercial solution and announce it. Fast.

I am currently using a Windoze PC which I hate with a passion and am selling up to get a RiscPC (I do have an A5000 and A4000) but I have been put right of going new due to the complete lack of where the market is heading. Keeping so quiet doesn't help the market. That's a sale they have lost and every sale helps.

Unregistered user A little bit comment about new 64 bit processors... don't worry 64-32 bit change is like 16-32 old change so more peoples want continue to use 32 software and so Win will have a 32 bit kenrel and a lot of problems with 64 bit kernel system... till all the software will run in 64 bit... remember that an operating system is FIRST it's software...
