</cynic>so when is the definitive statement from ROL appearing? speaking for myself i am NOT going to renew my foundation membership as long as i am not made *publically* aware of what is going on there. [not that anybody has sent me a renewal reminder or anything yet though i was one of the first members ... :-<] great marketing! :-/ |

Maybe the management at RISC OS Ltd have simply lost the plot when it comes to keeping customers happy. |

The comments which Andrew Rawnsley made in his talk suggested that the (temporary?!) cessation of programming work was attributable to lack of funds. That is unfortunate, but it is also sensible management. Assuming RISC OS Ltd did its sums and thought it could make money, that suggests that the uptake for RO4 is disappointingly low. It makes me wonder how many people who complained about the demise of Phoebe would actually have bought it. Speaking as an acting director, Andrew Rawnsley expressed RISC OS Ltd's "150%" commitment to future development of desktop RISC OS. We should all support that by buying RISC OS 4 and renewing our Foundation membership (they did also promise to do better on that front...) |

I have to ask how many people still use RiscOS 3.x? Personally, I found 3.7 to be hopelessly inadequate. |

In what way is RISC OS 3.7 "hopelessly inadequate"? For what? I still use it... until I install RISC OS 4 later today, that is. I couldn't help but buy it direct from ROL after Andrew Rawnsley's talk yesterday. It really drove home the need to offer direct support for the platform.

I still do - purely due to lack of funds to upgrade.

I was one of the people who was ready to buy Phoebe. Two days before I heard it had been cancelled I was trying to contact someone who would let me put down the maximum £500 deposit, this is despite the "much reduced" spec from what had originally been put forward. However given that this fell through I now (barely) still use RISC OS 3.1. I'm fortunate in that funds are not currently a problem instead I lack the confidence to commit the cash - the current speculation surrounding RISC OS Ltd really isn't helping here. Also I'm waiting for a suitable machine to appear. Evolution looks to have what it takes but the updated RiscStation website suggests the earliest possible shipping date is December. Having waited this long you might figure what difference is another few months going to make? However it could be too late... Mind you I would really, really love a StrongARM version of my PC laptop - that would be so cool - and I'd pay serious money to get it. However in terms of being "inspired" to support the platform - perhaps someone could explain to me what "semi-commercial developer" status means because I appear to have wasted a bit of cash :(

I was also ready to buy Phoebe and the cash is still sitting waiting for a machine which outperforms my SA (soon to be kineticised) Risc PC. As for confidence, I am confident that I will still want to be using my Risc OS machine for many years (alongside my windoze machine at work). It's an absorbing hobby and frankly thats enough. I gave up hoping for world domination some time ago. |

Maybe when new machines that supersede the StrongARM RiscPC finally appear, Castle and co. will submit machines for review to all the mags, not just the Acorn ones and if they are brilliant, which they no doubt will be, the mags will make a huge fuss and at least keep currenrt users, if not attract more to the platform. Just make sure they look as radical as an iMac :-) |
