Quite a regular discussion in the newsgroups this one, but I actually saw a copy of the magazine in Smiths yesterday for the first time in several months. It's got worse. At half the size of both of the magazines next to it and without a disc or CD on the cover, the price of £4.20 looked rather steep. Worse still when you come to the first page with any content on and find that half of the height of the page is taking up with the headline. I flicked through the magazine and only saw 2 articles that interested me (not necessarily AU's fault mind), and the second word of the games one was "hvaing". Not a good advert for the platform. |

Unfortunately I got the same feeling a few months back. I originally cancelled my subscription because I was rather annoyed having to wait almost a month for my issue and being able to read it in Icelandic newsstands before receiving my copy. There are daily mail flights from England to Iceland so somehow a month seems a little too long for my money.I picked up a copy last spring thinking of buying it but after browsing through it I didn't want to. Too much educational only stuff for me. There are probably lots of people that like it and have use for it but I get the feeling that the more technically minded RISC OS users are not overly thrilled about it. |

Hey, anybody want to pour in the venture capital like water? AU is a low-budget operation and a labour of love, as such it beats others of its ilk hollow. Putting the techy stuff in Archive and the education stuff in the glossy for the non-techy and just plain busy teachers, makes a lot of sense. Some techy stuff is always welcome in AU, especially if clearly explained, well written and relevant to users - want to write some? I am sure Steve Turnbull would love to hear from you. I just get a warm feeling when it drops on my doormat each month, knowing it's still there, still spreading the word. |

The main reason that I am a RISC OS user is Acorn User. I chose my dealer (CJE Micros) due to an article about Chris Evans, The much maligned adverts introduced me to; APDL, STD, PhotoDesk, RComp, Warm Silence Software, ISV and many more companies that I have bought software from. My point? That unless there is another RISC OS magazine on sale at Newsagents then AU is the only window displaying our OS and associated software to the general public. BTW I paid for my new RPC with trimmings at the Weston show in Feb 99. Regards Ron. |

I am a long time subscriber to AU from the days of the BBC model B/Master Days. Its true that there has been a gradual decline in the quantity of material on offer but the quality of presentation is still in my view quite good. Since the magazine is a general publication supporting the RiscOS Platform then it should cover all its aspects. Part of the dilemma is who do you aim the coverage at i.e new RiscOS users or old hands getting the balance right can be difficult. With respect to the cover CD this is a source of concern the price increase was I thought to cover the production costs of the CD and to offer a more extensive coverage of RiscOS topics. It might be that with falling sales or loss of subscribers the covers CD is no longer a viable option. Compared to other computer magazines in the shops its appears does not to offer a lot but PC mags have hundreds of pages devoted to advertisments bringing in lots of cash not to mention a continuous stream of new products and developments. AU have to contend with a shrinking market and a reducing number of developers and companies. I for one shall continue to support AU for the time being but with new Software as common as rocking horse droppings the time will come when there is little if anything to write about. A worrying situation than needs remmedy and soon. |
