So here I am waiting for an Omega made by Microdigital and running RISC OS which is owned by Pace. Why the **** is the newsstand mag called "acorn user"? It's like a bird-watcher's magazine being called "dinosaur user" (apologies to Castle's brand name, but you get the point). Will the availablity of Omegas be a good time to relaunch/rebrand the mag as say RISC Format or something? Maybe persuade a few newsagents to give it a try again? Anybody got any good suggestions for names? |

Does it ****** matter that much? Acorns still exist, they're the fastest machines, most widely available in the UK and are actively being updated. this is set to continue. The magazine says RISC OS in prominent letters on the front. It has been called Acorn User for almost 20 years and given that the name and hardware still exsit and will continue to exist indefinitely then why the heck not. What a fuss over nothing. |

Do you think that Gramophone magazine should have changed its name to Cassette in the '80s? Or CD in the 90s? Or even MP3? |

Hardly a fair comparison. Gramophone had a solid reputation as *the* magazine right across the recorded music industry. It's not as if Acorn user is avidly read by professionals across the PC industry, much as you and I would like it to be.btw sorry about the double posting, TIB said it didn't reconise my name with a small 'g' then went and posted my message anyway. |

* I'm not saying it SHOULD - just pointing out the validity of Guy's original question. |

Maybe they should rename it Acorn Abuser, and write the entire magazine like it. There's more material around now for stuff like that now than there was then... |

Some of the manufacturers of RISCOS computers tell me that some schools are returning to the RISCOS sector due to unreliable PCs. These people are more likely to recognise Acorn than RISCOS, so I feel it important to remember our roots. I also heard recently (I think from Castle) that they were not going to phase out the Acorn logo as quickly as they had first thought, because of this U-turn in some areas. I think the important thing is to make the magazine a really good read - changing the name would have a short term effect if people were not interested in the content. Cheers, Graham |

It's a fair comparison in my mind, Acorn User being the most widely-read magazine in the RISC OS world. Hardly anyone has a RiscStation or a MicroDigital machine compared to the thousands who have Acorn/Castle machines. How could you use the Omega as a reason to rename Acorn User? *If* it appears, I can't envisage a lot of people just going out and buying one. People will want to know if the damn thing works (that everything works and properly), if it is faster than a Kinetic etc etc. Unless, of course, people have money to burn Besdies, upping the content of Acorn User is perhaps of greater concern |

Does it ****** matter that much? No need to be rude about a thread someone else started. Chill out. (Don't forget this thread is entitled "Should AU be..?" and not "AU should be.." There are arguments for and against - the nostalgia of Acorn and the fact that it embodies why RISC OS "is" - and yet what we really are now is a RISCOS market, hence the titles of new shows and user groups. How could you use the Omega as a reason to rename Acorn User? It's not just the Omega - there's the possible RS portable which will (again subject to actual appearance ) be the only RISC OS laptop (not Acorn) and thus may be the first point of contact for the general public with the wonder that is RISC OS. Then there's rejuvinated RON project. These things may not be big sellers right now, but there's no reason why they can't be in as little as a year or two - and there's no reason for AU not to take the initiative and change title's with foresight (which would certainly look better than doing it grudingly as an afterthought).* Besdies, upping the content of Acorn User is perhaps of greater concern. Can't argue with that! |
