RiscStation have really gone for it this time - they've put a picture of a laptop case on their website, along with the following information: " RiscStation Portable Due date Oct 2000 More info Sept 1st 2000 " Well anyone want to take bets about some more info appearing tomorrow? Or indeed, about a laptop appearing on the market (or even a working demo model) before November? I'd sincerely love my cynicism to be proven wrong :) ROR

I emailed them last week asking for more info and permission to use that picture on this site, but have not had any form of response. |

While I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't release more information dead on time (although it'd be nice). One thing to bear in mind is that RiscStation seem to be customers of Simtec. Given that Simtec probably have larger customers RiscStation may sometimes be forced to wait in line. Don't let cynicism take over just because the announcement is a little late. I'll admit that the laptop looks interesting, although somewhat underpowered if it uses an ARM7500FE. I seem to recall reading somewhere that the reason for not using a StrongARM was because they didn't have a motherboard that would fit the case. I guess it's simply a case of not having such a motherboard predesigned because if PC laptops can fit a Pentium inside them there should be no problem with a StrongARM. Of course the VIDC and IOMD dependencies probably helped to sway the decision.

The web site has now had a couple of lines added to it. Apparently it will be released at the RISC OS 2000 show, and will cost around £1249 + VAT... But still no specs to marvel at.

Well, (as I hoped) stage one of my doubts were well put to bed! :) (maybe they had a peek at this forum ;) Let's see if they can do it twice and have a working demo at RISC OS 2000 ! Then we can all show the world how good RISC OS is... ROR :) P.S. Anyone heard anything about the Microdigital laptop of late, or know if they have a website?

Funnily enough, they do, at www.microdigital.co.uk Although it doesn't seem to have been updated since soon after the invention of the wheel. No lappy toppies to be seen. No mention of their Lightning card neither :-( although it's mentioned by name but not by price or availability in their ad in the latest au... |

Maybe they're just selling the case! I wouldn't be surprised if they did manage it (although maybe not *quite* to that schedule); it's just an R7500 lite in a small box, isn't it? Most of the groundwork must have already been done (unlike the peanut which was being designed from scratch, wasn't it?) If I was the sort of person who would have a laptop(*) I might buy one... (*) I'm not though. I'm too clumsy to look after something as expensive and fragile as a laptop!

If you look at the WACG website, http://www.wacg.org.uk/ you'll see that Andrew Rawnsley (R-Comp) may be bringing a RiscStation Laptop to his presentation in October, and failing that, Roy (Mr RiscStation) will be visiting us in November. I am very optimistic that we'll have a working laptop in the next couple of months. I'm just waiting for an order-form to appear! |
