Well, it looks like this is not a common problem, perhaps just a case of me & my friend suffering a similar hard drive problem at about the same time. |

Did you ever find out more about the cause? I've just had this happen for the fifth time in the last few months, and the frequency is increasing .... David |

Well, it came down to 2 possibilities, either corruption caused by Atl-Break followed by CTRL-Break, or my HD (which was several years old) wearing out. I've since changed hard drives, and have not had the problem again (then I havn't used Alt-Break followed by CTRL-Break either). I've heard that to prevent possible problems, if you stop a program with Alt-Break and the machine hangs - do NOT use CT RL-Break, use Reset instead. Hopefully someone who knows more about this than me can clarify/correct this advice.Charles |

Well, it came down to 2 possibilities, either corruption caused by Atl-Break followed by CTRL-Break, I read about that after the third time. I might have done it before the first three times, but definitely didn't do it before the last two. or my HD (which was several years old) wearing out. and the HD was only 3 months old before the first time, and is only 5 months old now. :-(David |

Has anyone else had a problem where, since having Risc Os 4 installed (4.02), their hard drive (IDE) suddenly looses formatting (or something - the message is "Disc not understood, has it been formatted?" after a couple of weeks or so? It happened to me, twice (the second time this weekend just past), it has also happened to a friend, and when I contacted CJA (who installed RO4 for me and did the original re-format of my drive) they indicated that they had heard of similar cases. So is this an RO4 problem, and if so, how pervasive? I'm a mite annoyed - fortunately the second time I had backed up the most important stuff, still |

I heard of a similar problem from someone else recently, but alas have no advice regarding it. Just so you don't feel too ignored. This person (who shall remain nameless due to my bad memory) also had RO4. Maybe just coincidence though. Still, ROR! |

Well, its happened again - this time I cannot get DiscKnight to fix the problem either (author has been e-mailed). So, What causes this problem? I am getting very very annoyed > as this keeps happening, and I cannot find out why! (Disk verifys ok, I gave it a longish soak test the last time I had to re-format) - I've heard it can be caused by ALT-Break followed by CTRL-Break, but that didn't cause it this time! Is it RO4 (likely, as I never had this before, if so, when are ROL goind to issue a fix? Is is a format E+ problem? or what!! Oh, and what happened to the thread name? |
