Hello.

I have an 4mb A7000 machine with a 16mb EDO ram chip, RISC OS 3.6 ,network and a 1.2gb harddrive.

Im having a problem getting a few games to work on my system.

* Stuntracer 2000 - Stays on WFE screen with music playing. Does not progress any furthur. Tried running from floppy and installing from HD.

* Phaethon (free version from this site - with patch applied) - Stops with an Internal error: abort on data transfer at &00027c58

*Saloon cars deluxe - Gets to game menu, but wont actually play game or run a rolling demo. Dashboard of car appears on screen, but "Please wait...." message stays forever on screen where track/grass/etc should be. I have a slightly hacked version of this game - so that could do something with it... but see thing about a3010

* Lemmings - Machine stops responding

* Zool - Internal error: abort on data transfer at &00008820, followed by return to desktop with "file core in use" error messages

*Diggers - Machine stops responding

The machine seems to be running fine. I got several games such as Wolf3d, Techodream, The Dungeon (with patch), Cannon fodder working perfectly

All these games used to work on my (now defunct) a3010. What am I doing wrong?

Last of all, does anyone know of any *GOOD* floppy disc recovery / backup utils?

Hey there. This probably isn't much help, but I'm pretty sure that Stunt Racer 2000 used some hardware specific (perhaps slightly dodgy) coding in order to get the graphics running fast enough. The architecture of later Acorn computers was different to the computers it was first written on and so it no longer works as is. I don't know if there's any way of getting round this. You could try contacting the Fourth Dimension (although they'll probably want money unhappy )

Theres a patch for Lemmings on this page, but I seem to remember that it doesn't handle the palette techniques Lemmings uses and so all the colours will come out wrong. There's also a patch for phaethon, which may well get your copy working.

As for Diggers, Alex Macfarlane Smith should be able to supply you with a patch (even if it isn't listed on his site).

If you get really desperate and resort to spending cash, then StrongGuard! may be of some help for Saloon Cars Deluxe and Zool. There's a slim chance that Wag Software's NoDisc will get Stunt Racer working, but if not then the only alternative is to buy a new copy from the 4th Dimension (Or pick up a cheap A3010 on ebay wink)

If I remember correctly, David Pilling made some pretty good disk recovery stuff, try asking about this on the Iconbar. As for the rest, I think that Phlamers and Pete have got it covered.

Cheers for the advice.

I picked up a second hand copy of StrongGuard for a fiver and it seems to work for most of the games listed above - give or take a few graphical / speed glitches.

Oh.. .and Phaethon and Diggers still dont work.. oh well... at least most of them do smile
