Apple has launched the eMac, a desktop computer for schools, in the US.

The machine is powered by a 700MHz PowerPC G4 processor and kinda like a 15in monitor iMac, but a little smaller with a bigger screen.

The eMac has a 17in flat CRT monitor for "ruggedness and durability", not to mention cheapness: LCD screen prices are still rising. It's got an ever-so-slightly smaller footprint than the iMac - it's 8mm less deep. There's a choice of two drives: CD-ROM or DVD-ROM/CD-RW. Mac 0S 9 and Mac OS X are bundled in, as are iMovie, iPhoto, iTunes, AppleWorks, FireWire, and USB. Also there's 10/100BASE-T Ethernet port for broadband, or an optional AirPort wireless card.

Prices start at $999, making it, Apple claims, the "most affordable PowerPC G4 system ever".
