riscos.info - C for the masses

Peter Naulls, he of the Unix porting and other initiatives, has launched his new riscos.info site.

The aim is to provide a comprehensive guide to C programming under RISC OS, with copious personal experience and discussions thrown in.

But that's not all - Peter's also taken over maintenence of lcc for RISC OS, a small, fast ANSI C compiler. This should give novices especially access to an easier to use free compiler that will work on almost any RISC OS machine.

And don't get me wrong, I like it, I think it's fine. But someone going to riscos.info might expect to find info about RISC OS itself. Which isn't /quite/ what there is.

Yes, they are there, but IMVHO none of them gives a decent picture of RO to genuine newbies. Not that I'm even saying such a thing is needed, but riscos.info would have been an ideal place for it. Note also that I'm not saying that you should change it, or that it's a bad place for the programming info.

Well, if someone writes a decent "About RISC OS" piece, I'll prominantly display it on the front of TIB and/or riscos.me.uk.

Just visited the site - and I am downloading GCC right now (at 80Kb/sec - hahaha!). I'm really pleased that each download will fit on a floppy disc - now I can take it home and give it a whirl.

I've already used EasyC/C++ and found it to be somewhat unstable. Many commands (esp. C++ ones) were not supported. Nevertheless, it is a valuable learning tool which has helped introduce me to the world of C/C++.

Thanks for a really great site, Paul!

ps. I'm /really/ looking forward to reading the section on C + Assembler ;-)

i think you're referring to lcc.. you won't be able to fit the full gcc suite on 1 floppy..

..maybe you should read a little more carefully ;-)

lcc will indeed fit on a floppy, but take a
look at the GCC archives. It is packed into
serveral archives precisely for the reason that
it can be transported on floppies.

My C/C++ programming is strictly of the 'Hello
World' level. When it comes to using the
libraries, GUI etc I'm completely lost. I'd like
to be able to port some of the open source programs
so I think this is a great idea - I just might be
able to learn how to do so.

There's now links on the page to general info sites :p

Anyway, the page has been substantially updated
since its launch, and will continue to be, so check back. And please, if you have anything to contribute to the site, it would be most welcome.

I've now had 100 lcc downloads - and not a single bug report (so far), so that's excellent too.

Maybe it just means people aren't using it ;-)
