Destiny Information

Posted by Dave Sloan on 00:00, 30/10/2000 | , ,

Destiny was produced by Robert Templeman and Robert Alcock. It is acclaimed as the first full 3d walkabout game homegrown on an Acorn computer, other games, such as Doom by RComp, Wolfenstein by Powerslave and Quake by TBA, being ported from the PC market. Being Acorn only has allowed a great Destiny to be designed specifically to suit Acorn machines, PC ports needing a lot of optimisation to re-write complex PC-orientated code.

The original release date was June '96, though due to the massive amount of work involved in producing this game, and 2 hour curry breaks, finishing had to be postponed. However, the game has finally been released and is actually very good. See the review in our commercial reviews section.

Features now included are realistic 3d views - look from any angle, underwater scenes, properly textured scene files and a massive array of weaponry, ranging from a combat knife, through mini-guns to a heat seeking missile launcher. A selection of mines are also available ala GoldenEye on the Nintendo 64. Scenes will be interchangable, so new levels can be made, but according to Rob it will take a while to figure out a scene editor, as some of the special effects take quite a while to implement.

The full version is set to fills 8 HD discs and is very big. Although this may not seem enormous when compared to Quake or Doom, the important thing about a game like this is the engine, although the level files take up a lot of room, they can be altered fairly easily, so hopefully many, many levels will be built to fit in to the game.

Destiny runs on all Acorn RiscPCs with 8Mb+ of RAM. It works best with StrongArm processors, but will work on the average RiscPC 600.

Current Speeds are:

  • Approximately 9-18 fps on a Risc PC 600
  • An estimated 25fps+ on a StrongARM Risc PC.
