The Icon Bar: News and features: Hyperland

Yeah, that whole "updating a website" thing. We're quite shit at it, aren't we? We do have some good stuff coming up, though. In the meantime, if you've not seen it, I recommend watching Hyperland - a 1990 Douglas Adams documentary. To say much more would spoil it, but it's fascinating stuff, especially considering when it was made. Pity about the snipe at Filthy, Rich & Catflap at the start, mind you. (Indeed, the snipes at telly are pretty misjudged as a whole.) It's utterly wonderful, and I recommend you buy the DVD if you haven't seen it. At £6.99, what is there to lose? Well, apart from £6.99, of course.

I remember this, it's on an old video somewhere...
Aside from vague images of Tom Baker stading astride piles of junk, the strongest memory I had of this programme was the word 'obsequeus'. |

Would it be too much to ask of articles on the Icon Bar to expect a little more than 'go buy this'? |

Would it be too much to ask of articles on the Icon Bar to expect a little more than 'go buy this'? To be fair, the article admits we've been rubbish recently! It was a filler post, just to let people know we're still alive, whilst we get together some content. Although I would point out that "go buy this" was a footnote - not the main point of the post. |

Yeah, that whole "updating a website" thing. We're quite shit at it, aren't we? I don't mean to sound like a prude, and I'm sure the whole obscenities scene is fine for personal websites (I do it on my own), but I think that "We're quite shit at it" is the wrong sort of the tone for articles on TIB. Either that or TIB has started on that long slippery slope dooooownhill... I just think it lowers whatever tone this once-respectable (RISC OS) site had left. |

Well, I don't consider swearwords to be lowering the tone, I'm afraid. We'll never agree on that though - believe me, I've had this discussion many times before, and nobody has ever convinced anybody! - so there's probably no point having the discussion...
What I *do* think lowers our respectability is the severe lack of content. |

I would point out that "go buy this" was a footnote - not the main point of the post. There was no more content. But don't reply to this - let's have more good Icon Bar articles. For this one you could easily have given some background to Douglas Adams, said something about the subject of the programmes, linked that to a RISC OS program & company, referred to an Acorn User cover, and given hints to the answer of a recent Qercus prize quiz - all relevant stuff to the Icon Bar and all of more interest than "Go buy this whilst we think of something more interesting." ;-) |

I would point out that "go buy this" was a footnote - not the main point of the post. There was no more content. Well, there wasn't if you completely ignore the fact that one of the main points of the post was to highlight the presence of the Hyperland videos on Google. (The other point being to say "Look, see, we're still here... No, really, we are, honest!")
But don't reply to this - let's have more good Icon Bar articles. I assume you mean don't waste time replying to this when you could be writing/editing those articles1 (so it's okay for me to do so, not being one of the Icon Boys. Shutup about Quicksand, thanks, I've just got home so I'm on my break between paid work and developing! Plus, that's easy, which was the whole point. )
For this one you could easily have given some background to Douglas Adams, said something about the subject of the programmes, So, while not wasting time replying to this, in order that they can spend time writing those other articles, you think they should have taken time out from those other articles to turn the "We really are still here, honest!" post into something more?
Okay then.
linked that to a RISC OS program & company, referred to an Acorn User cover, and given hints to the answer of a recent Qercus prize quiz Did you blink and not read this?
That doesn't mean they don't have to link stuff to RISC OS, but why go to the effort of doing that when it's unnecessary? (It would be easier to link Douglas Adams to Apple, anyway, which is included in the Icon Bar 2.0 remit.)
- all relevant stuff to the Icon Bar and all of more interest than "Go buy this whilst we think of something more interesting." ;-) Regardless of that, you should go out and buy Filthy, Rich and Catflap. It's great.
1. Oh, the irony, the irony, they've all got it irony. Oh, buggrit, the quote's wrong, but you get the point. |

Quite
I think I'll withdraw from posting any more in this thread though, because it'll just get me annoyed. How such an innocuous post can cause something like this is just a sad reflection on the state of the RISC OS market. And it's partly the reason why I left. |

I was about to post, but VinceH beat me to it. Indeed, the irony of the Qercus editor reprimanding a website for not updating often enough is beyond parody...
Please don't be annoyed: I liked the link, and looking forward to the stuff to come And don't be too hard on yourself: Everyone (reasonable) knows that TIB is run in people's spare time for no profit: in recent months the article count has been pretty good, and I think the change and makeover has been for the best. |

Indeed That too - but I actual irony I was thinking about was that Mr C suggested not replying, asking for more articles instead, implying one was distracting you from the other. I think Druck has pointed out the high number of posts he's made to usenet a few times. |

I think you should bump up this to a feature article. You wouldn't believe how long I'd been waiting for that to happen, or how often I've been refreshing that page to see it update. |

If 2008 starts tomorrow, and lasts for a month, you'll get a pretty pattern. Sorry to spoil it folks! That and issue 279 was actually dated 2006/7 (December/January issue). ;-) |

Finally got around to watching it.
Wasn't Mr Baker good in his role as the paper clip - and much more entertaining than the paper clip could ever hope to be! |
