It's cheap as chips...

Panther...or so Castle think. I'd disagree, as Castle plug another of their IYONIX "offers".

Castle are selling their Panthers at a discounted price of 999UKP (saving of 400UKP) to make way for "a new range of DVD IYONIX pcs".

Will Ling of Castle told us "Customers who do not wish to lose out on the new DVD technology can also acquire a DVDRW upgrade (normally UKP 129) for just UKP 100 and Castle will fit this upgrade free of charge - providing the upgrade is ordered at the same time as the Special Offer Panther."

Offer expires 30th June 2005 or when all pre-built stock is sold, but there will probably be another offer then.

This is actually a pretty hot price for a new top-of-the-range RISC OS computer. Good to see more sensible pricing :)

But we've already had sub-900UKP IYONIX:

Like it or not - people want to be fooled by "offers".

I have personally experimented with it by actually raising the price for a product and then making a "special offer" lowering the price back to the original one. The result? Sales almost doubled, just because there was a "special offer".

I fully understand why Castle are doing this over and over again. You can disparage this in any way you want but it works and people will continue to buy these offers. If it wasn't working do you honestly think Castle would continue doing it?

Hey fellas, let's not forget that we all used to moan and moan that RISC OS companies did not do decent promotion. This is decent promotion. Look, here is a new 32bit machine which we wanted. It is being marketed very well. People are buying it. Additionally, Castle appear to be shifting a huge number of embedded RISC OS devices. This is all good stuff.

Just to be clear - I'm very pleased that Castle are promoting their products and I sincerely hope they'll sell plenty of Iyonixes (correct spelling please?).

"IYONIX PCs"

Except it doesn't like that, telling me:

More than seventy percent (jmb: was 70%) of your message is written in uppercase (jmb: was UPPER CASE) (jmb: only because it's meant to be like that). Text written in all-caps is considered SHOUTING and is difficult to read (jmb: take your complaint up with Castle, thanks). Please edit your message and try to write like a normal person

Or, you could just have made your comment a little more friendly, like:
"The correct spelling is IYONIX PCs".

This is one of the worst TIB news articles I've read in a while. This sort of opinion on the first line of an article makes me think that TIB is arrogant and subjective. Remember that all the Iconbar staff should try and maintain a uniformity on tone throughout the site. Comment or opinion should be marked as such, and should ideally appear /after/ the news item itself.

Sorry to be a bore, but this is why I usually skip the front page and go straight to the forums.

It isn't opinion. It is fact that castle think it is cheap, from what the PR says.
I said "I'd disagree". The fact that I use "I'd" clearly labled it as opinion. If you just want the PR then use http://www.iconbar.com/pressreleases/ but I think you will find that this also contains bias.

My very limited knowledge of journalism suggests that it's best to leave out personal opinions altogether from articles that aren't meant to be opinion pieces, and save them for the comments. Let people make their own minds up about the facts.

I personally still don't understand the problem with having opinions in news articles like this, as long as people don't twist the facts to fit them. I don't see the harm it does - people are intelligent enough to make up their own mind about things. Just as I did with this article - I think the offer is quite good!
