Yes indeedy! In a shock news bulletin yesterday,
Microdigital announced that the production of the
Omega computer has begun!
Microdigital have also given a release date, more or less. Machines should on their way in time for Christmas.
But wait... There's more. Much more!
Daughterboards for the X-Scale and the Floating point co-processor cards are also being made and should reach Microdigital in about four weeks time.
Shipping of the X-Scale processors should begin sometime in January with the ArmTwister technology and, get this, a 32bit operating system!!!
A bit like waiting for a bus eh?

Note that MD say "hopefully a 32-bit operating system" and they also don't specify RISC OS. ARM Linux anyone? ;) The announcement is good news but don't go speculating - if they make Xmas then we've not got long to wait for full details. |

A cluster with nodes at £179 a pop (including local memory and disk) might be more interesting. As it is, Microdigital are certainly trying to be the new "old Acorn" - look at all those options! |

It sounds like Castle are learning to share - ROL are going to be selling a 32-Bit C/C++, Microdigital are getting a 32-Bit OS.... This may kill the Iyonix though, especially if it does get RO5 and 1.2GHz XScale with FPA - a 306MHz SA110 for 26-Bit apps is a lot faster than the RPC700 speed of Aemulor, and a 1.2GHz XScale is a lot faster than a 600MHz, even with the slower memory. So when the Omega was originally going to be ready in January, they meant 2003! ;o) |

First off the fastest xScale at the moment is 733MHz. A 1GHz version may appear in the future. The 1.2GHz device Microdigital refer to is Samsung's Halla (ARM-10) this device is NOT an xScale (although it will be ARM V5TE). MD have only said they would be "talking to Samsung about it". Has MD released any Omega's to developers yet ? As MD say (and I quote) "The main news is that the Omega is now in production", that being the case there should be some Omega's made available to developers. Otherwise all the new software will be tested only on Iyonix and that surely would leave the Omega at somewhat of a disadvantage Regards Annraoi |
